Theory & Hazard Perception Tests
To achieve your goal of obtaining your Driving Licence you need to pass your Theory and Hazard Perception tests. These tests have been devised by the DSA to help improve drivers’ knowledge, and ultimately, road safety. So when booking your practical test you will need to have your theory pass certificate reference number handy, otherwise you won’t be able to book your test.
Theory Test - this is a multi-choice computer test conducted at one of the DSA Theory Test Centres. The test comprises of a series of 50 multi-choice questions taken from a bank of 1000. You will have to answer 43 questions correctly in-order to pass, all within a time limit of 57 minutes.
Hazard Perception Test - in this test you will be shown a series of 14 clips of every day driving situations which will contain at least one developing hazard, but in one of the clips there will be two hazards. The earlier you spot the hazard and make a response the higher your score will be. The scoring goes from 5 to 0.
You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass.

From 23 January 2012 the theory test will be made up of multiple-choice questions which are no longer published in learning materials.
The reason behind the move is to stop candidates from simply memorising theory test questions and answers and learning by rote.
